*This podcast episode discusses trauma, which some may find triggering.
In 1989, tanks rolled into China’s Tiananmen Square and brutally ended a demonstration by students calling for political and economic reform.
Philippa Smethurt, who was teaching in China at the time, saw the ripple effects of this watershed moment in history play out before her eyes. Her students howled in pain for loved ones or friends who were involved.
Although Philippa didn’t know it at the time, she became a lightning rod for her students’ trauma – something she’s experienced since in her 30 years as a psychotherapist. But she says there’s something profound in sitting with someone in pain and not trying to offer platitudes or to ‘fix’ a situation.
But given that trauma is a wound – “one we often hide from ourselves and others” – Philippa has drawn on her 30 years of experience to pen a book that, as she says, “takes us on a 20-point tour of trauma on the body and mind, examining the particular ways that trauma manifests, from fight, flight, freeze, submit, to dissociation, anger, brain hijacking and trust issues. It captures the link between the behaviours we see and the deep-seated trauma many have faced.”
Here’s why you need to tune in
Aside from helpful pointers to help you recognise the ways you respond to trauma and the practical steps you can take to address it, Philippa comes to the Career Interrupted podcast armed with a collection of fun visual aids. So, if you’ve ever been blown off-course in life, or are trying to support someone who has, Philippa’s insightful tips will give you the guidance you need.
