In 2018, having an understanding of how social media works is a desired skillset by many employers. The TechPixies Social Media course will teach you the essentials of all four major social media networks: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. You will also learn how to plan, design, schedule and manage a social media campaign using free online tools such as Canva and Buffer.

Our Social Media Course is perfect for you if you have taken a career break or are looking to upskill with social media or if you would like to manage social media accounts for your own business.

The TechPixies Social Media Course is face to face, in term time, affordable and life changing. Unlike any other social media course out there, we not only teach you new skills but integrated into our 12 week programme are 3, two hour group life coaching sessions. During these life coaching sessions, you will take stock of where you are, set goals for where you want to be and review how far you’ve come.

You will learn in a professional and friendly environment with other like-minded individuals. We have minimum class size of 6 and a maximum class size of 9.


The TechPixies Social Media Course is 12 weeks long. Here is the breakdown of each week and what you will cover:

In the first session, you will get to know the other people on your course. We start with a 2 hour life coaching session in which you do a self-assessment on where you are now and start to think about what is in store for you in the future. During the second half of this session, you will be introduced to the TechPixies online learning platform and Google Drive, two essential tools which we will need to use throughout the course.

During the branding week, we will teach you the importance of brand guidelines for social media content creation and teach you how to use the amazing and free tool, Canva, to help you start to design your own visual content for social media.

Instagram is one of the fastest growing social networks and certainly the most visual. In this session, we will give you the ins and outs of Instagram, teaching you how it works as well as tricks and tips to help grow your following. We will also show you how Instagram is used by organisations to showcase their culture and values and to engage with their customers. You will also learn about how, when and where to use Hashtags.

Twitter is a fantastic way to do research about things you are interested in and stay on top of trending topics. Like Instagram, we will teach you how organisations use Twitter to connect with, and grow, their following.

As an individual, a Facebook can be a great way to connect with friends and family. We will walk you through the personal side of Facebook as well as Facebook Pages, which allow organisations to be able to reach a wider audience, raise brand awareness and generate leads with paid advertising. We will also explain how boosting works and show you how to create a Facebook ad.

LinkedIn is an important tool when getting back into the workplace, looking for volunteer opportunities or when setting up a small business. Linkedin can be a great way to re-ignite your professional network. We will show you how to get the most out of your LinkedIn profile. You will also get an overview of LinkedIn groups, LinkedIn business pages and LinkedIn articles.

The first half of this session is focused on life coaching. In this session, you will learn how to create SMART goals, goals which are specific, measured, achievable, realistic and timely. We’ll ask you to start thinking about how you might want to start using your new social media skills and what your next steps towards a job, a volunteer opportunity, or setting up a small business might be.

The second half of the session you will start planning a social media campaign. You and your cohort will be tasked with running the social media for TechPixies for a two week period of time. In this session, we will get you to think about the product you are promoting, the customer who is buying it and how you will get them excited and engaged on social media. You will be paired up with another person on the course and together, you will brainstorm content ideas which will go onto the TechPixies social media feeds. Your homework task will be to create the on-brand images necessary using Canva and write the copy that will be published alongside the imagery you create.

During this session, you will learn how to use Buffer, an amazing tool which will help you to pre-schedule your social media posts, track the performance of your content, and manage all your accounts in one place. You will then load the images you have created in Canva as well as the copy that goes with it into Buffer. You will start to understand the magic of pre-planned and pre-scheduled social media posts.

Once your campaign is up and running, your job will be to engage with people who interact with the content you are publishing. You’ll also be looking at what is working and what is not working and making tweaks to your second week campaign based on the evidence of your first week. During the second week, you will pay Facebook to boost your best performing post from the previous week.

Upon completion of your social media campaign for TechPixies, you will take time to look back at how it went. Were you successful? Why? Why not? We will teach you how to analyse posts to determine how to use the results to help plan your next campaign.

The final session is your chance to look back at the previous 11 weeks and get clarification on any of the points that you are unsure about. In the life coaching session, we will also celebrate how far you have come and see how you are getting on with your SMART goals which you set in week 6. The course will end with Certificates and a celebration.

Course Facilitator and Support

Joy Foster will be teaching the upcoming courses in Oxford and London. Joy got started in digital marketing in 2003, when she quit her job to train full time for the Olympics in Archery. She had to build her own website (before WordPress), keep it updated (before Twitter) and raise her own training funds (before Crowdfunding!).

After competing for the US Archery Team from 2004 to 2007, Joy moved to Switzerland to marry the love of her life, Olympic Gold Medalist, Tim Foster (Men’s Coxless Fours Sydney – Steve Redgrave’s final Olympic gold!). Joy got pregnant on the honeymoon and found herself unemployed and with a brand new baby in a foreign country. She realized that so many other women were in the same position as she was having followed their spouses to a new country, so she started a blog called Living in Luzern. The blog went from 468 hits in its first year to over 120,000 hits 5 years later and is still going strong 10 years on.

In 2013, Joy took a lead digital marketing role at a startup in London called Founders4Schools, a charity which helps connect school age children to entrepreneurs. While working on Founders4Schools, Joy was inspired by the many founders she was in contact with to start her own business. She applied for a grant from UnLtd to start Made with Joy, an agency who built WordPress websites for charities, non profits and social enterprise. It was not long after starting Made with Joy, that an opportunity came up to launch TechPixies. Joy is now focused full time on TechPixies and the mission of helping 1500 upskill with technology and regain confidence in their digital skillsets by 2022.

Online and offline support for the course will be provided by a woman who has recently completed the course.

We teach the Social Media for Business course at Grant Thornton off Cowley Road. The address is: 3140 John Smith Dr, Oxford OX4 2WB.

Our courses are designed to run during term time from 10am to 2pm. Our next two courses will run on the following dates:

Please note, we are confirming dates for London at the moment, the Social Media Course is likely to run on the same dates as the April 25th Oxford course. The location will be at Grant Thornton in Finsbury Square.

Application and Course Fees

To apply, you must first attend a taster session. After attending a taster session, if the course feels like the right fit for you, please fill in an application form. We will invite you for an interview if we feel you would be a good fit for the course. If accepted onto the course, we will send you a link to pay your deposit via bank transfer or online. If at anytime, you have a question about the course or the application process, please contact us or call 07788 242 600. If you aren’t ready to apply but want to be informed about upcoming courses, please register your interest.

The deposit is £150+VAT and is non-refundable and due within 7 days of being offered a place in order to secure your place. The course fee is £1500+VAT and is due one week prior to the start of the course this can be paid via bank transfer or online with a debit or credit card. If you have already participated on the WordPress course, the deposit will be waived.

If you would like to pay in 12 or 24 month installments, we would encourage you to apply for a loan from our partner, the FredericksFoundation. If you need to apply for a loan, please indicate your interest in the application form and we will help you start the process. Please note that the process can take up to 4 weeks to be approved, so if you are keen to have the payment plan option, your application needs to be in 6 weeks prior to the start of the course.
